Our Story

Discover the story behind M.I.K.A.N Reading Club, a dedicated club at Hugh McRoberts Secondary School in Vancouver, British Columbia. Our mission is to foster language skills in young people within our inclusive and multicultural city. We offer engaging reading sessions in Mandarin, Cantonese, French, and English.

Our Inspiration

M.I.K.A.N Reading was born from a passion to help young individuals enhance their language abilities. We focus on Mandarin, Cantonese, French, and English, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of Richmond, BC. Our aim is to provide accessible and enjoyable language learning opportunities.

Our Core Values

At M.I.K.A.N Reading, our core values revolve around providing age-appropriate, diverse, and linguistically suitable content. Our volunteers carefully select picture books and short stories, and also consult with our sponsor teachers to ensure that the reading materials are appropriate for each age group. We often combine two languages in a single session to boost bilingual comprehension and celebrate festive themes like Lunar New Year, Halloween, and Christmas.

Who We Reach

M.I.K.A.N Reading offers free Zoom sessions, typically 30–45 minutes, once every 1-2 weeks. We ensure a safe and free online environment with password protection, waiting rooms, and the presence of a parent volunteer or teacher sponsor at every session. Our sessions feature engaging picture books and short stories in multiple languages, often blending languages and incorporating festive themes.
